Nothing has launched Essential, its new AI platform created as the base for a future AI-native operating system. The rollout begins with two main features: Essential Apps, which allow users to build customised tools using natural language prompts, and Playground, a community space for sharing, remixing, and downloading creations such as apps, Camera Presets, and EQ profiles. The company said Essential will gradually evolve into Essential OS, built around personalisation and adaptability rather than standardised app experiences.
Essential Apps
According to the company, Essential Apps enable users to create their own tools on devices simply by describing a task. For example, prompts like “compile receipts from the gallery into a weekly PDF” or “generate a one-page call brief from calendar and messages” can instantly generate an app. These apps can be added directly to the home screen, offering a new approach compared to conventional uniform applications.
The company added that Essential turns foundational AI into hyper personalised experiences to assist users in everyday life.
In a statement, Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, said, “With Essential, we begin to chip away at the outdated and elitist system set up by the legacy market leaders. A new era requires new thinking. The future of software will be one of unrestricted access, collective innovation, and hyper personalisation. Moats of the past will be dismantled, opening the door to a truly user-led future.”
Playground
All Essential creations will exist in Playground, a hub for sharing and remixing apps, Camera Presets, EQ profiles, and more. The company explained that Playground will function as a collaborative community where users can exchange ideas and access each other’s tools without the restrictions of traditional app stores.
Nothing said this platform scale supports an alternative ecosystem that is not limited by existing market rules. By integrating its own hardware and software, the company aims to develop AI-led features that adapt closely to individual needs.
The company highlighted that Essential is designed to shift from mass-market software to personalised creation. Since AI reduces the cost and time of app development, even tools designed for just one person can be practical. According to the company, community members in the alpha stage have already tested hundreds of use cases, from mental health trackers to family organisers.
