Nothing Phone 4a Pro introduces bold design shift that could split opinions

At a recent launch event in London, the Nothing Phone 4a Pro made its first appearance on stage and immediately surprised many observers. The device marks a major departure from the semi-translucent design that has defined Nothing since the brand’s debut. Instead of the signature see-through back seen on earlier models such as the Phone 4a and Phone 3, the new device adopts a metal unibody design, with transparency limited only to the camera module. The change feels dramatic for a company known for its distinctive aesthetic and early reactions suggest the new look is already dividing opinions among users and enthusiasts.

Nothing built its identity around translucent design, a style that reminded many people of the experimental era of the 90s and early 2000s when companies like Apple and Nintendo explored transparent hardware. The Phone 4a Pro, however, leans towards a more mainstream flagship appearance. With its slim metal body and raised camera plateau, the design may remind some users of modern premium smartphones. While some critics may see the shift as a bold reinvention, others could view it as a move influenced by competing brands. Despite the change, the company still wants attention focused on the rear panel, where the signature design elements remain.

One such element is the Glyph Matrix, a circular LED system placed near the camera module. First introduced with the Phone 3, the interface uses small LED lights to show notifications, timers, battery level, or even function as a stopwatch. Nothing calls these features “Glyph Toys.” The display is more than 50% larger than the one on the Phone 3 and shines twice as bright despite having fewer mini-LEDs. It also supports Live Updates for services like Uber rides and Google Calendar events. However, unlike the Phone 3, the dedicated Glyph button is missing, meaning users must now access these features through the Settings menu.

The Phone 4a Pro features a larger 6.83-inch display with a 144Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 5,000 nits for HDR content, compared to 4,500 nits on the Phone 3. The screen offers a 2800×1260 resolution and Gorilla Glass 7i protection. Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor with 8GB or 12GB RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage, delivering up to 30% better graphics and 27% faster CPU performance. The phone packs a 5,400mAh battery with 50W fast charging. Its camera system includes a 50MP main sensor, 50MP periscope telephoto with 3.5x zoom and 8MP ultrawide, along with a 32MP selfie camera. Unlike the Phone 4a’s Samsung-based setup, the Pro version uses a Sony LYTIA 700C sensor. The device runs Nothing OS 4.1 based on Android 16, offering tools like Essential Search and the Essential Space app for organising voice notes, screenshots and text.
