Nothing has launched Essential, its new AI platform designed as the base for a future AI-native operating system. The company says Essential focuses on personalisation and adaptability, moving away from uniform app experiences offered by traditional software.
The rollout starts with two key features: Essential Apps and Playground. Essential Apps allow users to create customised tools on their devices using simple natural language prompts. For example, a user could describe a task such as “compile receipts from the gallery into a weekly PDF” or “generate a one-page call brief from calendar and messages,” and the AI will instantly create an app for it. These apps can be placed directly on the home screen, shifting away from one-size-fits-all applications.
“With Essential, we begin to chip away at the outdated and elitist system set up by the legacy market leaders. A new era requires new thinking. The future of software will be one of unrestricted access, collective innovation, and hyper personalisation. Moats of the past will be dismantled, opening the door to a truly user-led future,” said Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing.
Playground is the second element of Essential, designed as a community hub where users can share, remix, and download apps, Camera Presets, EQ profiles, and other creations. Unlike traditional app stores, Playground encourages collective innovation by allowing users to contribute their own ideas and build upon those shared by others.
According to the company, this approach makes it possible to support tools even if they are designed for a single individual. AI reduces the cost and effort of app creation, enabling hyper-personalised solutions for daily life. Early community testing during the alpha phase has already produced hundreds of use cases, from mental health trackers to family organisers.
Nothing believes that combining its own hardware and software gives it the ability to push AI-led features that adapt more closely to individual needs. The company positions Essential as the first step towards Essential OS, a platform built for personalisation, accessibility, and user-driven innovation.
