Nokia To Expand Research And Development Centre In India

Telecom equipment maker Nokia will expand its research and development centre in India by hiring more local talent, the company’s India Country Manager Tarun Chhabra announced at a government event on Monday.

Chhabra said Nokia has been committed to India for the past 30 years and aims to play a key role in skilling and employing people in the country. “We are going to hire more people in our R&D centre. Other than the R&D centre of about 8,000 people, we have around 4,000 people who are supporting all global service operations from India. It means there is a huge opportunity,” he said at a BSNL event.

Highlighting the importance of cyber security, Chhabra added, “We further commit that we are going to play a very important role in skilling the Indian people here, and then hiring them in Nokia R&D centres in the future.”

The state-run telecom firm signed a memorandum of understanding with Nokia, Ericsson, Cisco, and Qualcomm to introduce advanced training in 5G, artificial intelligence, machine learning, networking, and digital technologies at BSNL’s apex training institute, Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT) in Jabalpur.

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the collaboration as a step towards the Prime Minister’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. “Qualcomm, Ericsson, Nokia and Cisco, the four most important equipment suppliers for the telecom revolution across the world, have now from today started training courses in BRBBAIT Centre in Jabalpur,” he said.

Scindia called it the beginning of a new journey to transform India’s human resource potential into a global telecom workforce.

Under the initiative, Nokia will train 300 students annually in 5G radio, core networks, and AI/ML applications, while Ericsson will offer hands-on 5G training and online learning modules to over 2,000 students each year. Qualcomm will set up a Qualcomm Institute at BRBRAITT for advanced 5G and AI training, and Cisco will provide free online curriculum and digital tools. BSNL will oversee the implementation across non-profit educational institutions to ensure equal access to digital learning.

Ericsson India Managing Director Nitin Bansal said, “This collaboration is an investment in building a future-ready workforce to lead innovation in 5G, IoT, and advanced telecom technologies.”
