Nokia Opens New R&D and Manufacturing Campus in Finland to Drive 5G and 6G Innovation

Nokia has launched a new research and development and manufacturing campus in Oulu, Finland, dedicated to creating next generation networks built for artificial intelligence. The company has named the facility the “Home of Radio” and it will be responsible for testing and delivering advanced 5G and 6G radio networks.

The centre spans more than 59,000 square feet and employs over 3,000 experts. It will operate in collaboration with universities, technology companies and start ups as part of a wider innovation ecosystem. Nokia says the campus will speed up the development of networks through both simulated and real world testing environments. Nokia has described it as “the world’s most advanced hub for the entire lifecycle of 5G and 6G innovation.”

The immediate focus of the campus will be on 5G, including standardisation, system on chips, radio hardware and software, and patents. A dedicated Oulu Factory within the facility will work on the introduction of new products, building on Nokia’s legacy of innovation with Massive MIMO radios such as Osprey and Habrok. At the same time, research into next generation 6G solutions will also be a priority to ensure future proof connectivity.

The inauguration was attended by President of Finland Alexander Stubb, who said, “This investment is great news and it’s a statement that it pays to invest in Finland. It also says that network infrastructure is key – when you’re working on 5G or 6G, you’re creating the neural network of whatever we do in artificial intelligence, whatever we do in robotization or Internet of Things.”

Nokia CEO and President Justin Hotard added, “Oulu embodies our culture of innovation, and the new campus will be essential to advancing connectivity necessary to power the AI supercycle.”

Construction of the Nokia campus began in 2022, with sustainability at the core of its design. It houses one of the world’s largest CO2 based district heating and cooling plants. Surplus energy from the facility will be used to provide heating for 20,000 households in the city.
