At the global forum in Davos, Karnataka took fresh steps to strengthen its position as a major technology hub by engaging with global companies on expansion and innovation.
Nokia Corporation has shown interest in setting up a Global Capability Centre (GCC) and additional research centres in Karnataka, Industries Minister M B Patil said. The telecom major has been associated with the state for over 25 years and currently runs its largest global research centre in Bengaluru.
During discussions, Nokia shared plans to expand its footprint across Karnataka, including possible operations in Tier-2 cities. These talks were held between senior Nokia officials and the state government on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Davos. Patil said the government has assured full support for Nokia’s future expansion plans in the state.
The minister also reiterated Karnataka’s commitment to the World Economic Forum’s ‘Yes-BLR UpLink’ initiative. The initiative aims to scale the ‘Yes Bengaluru’ programme on sustainable urban development into a globally recognised platform for government and industry collaboration.
Patil said the initiative was discussed in detail during a meeting with John Dutton, Head of UpLink at the World Economic Forum. The programme offers financial support, mentorship, and pilot opportunities to start-ups working on real-world, city-focused challenges linked to urban development. According to Patil, the WEF UpLink delegation appreciated the Karnataka government’s continued backing of the initiative.
In addition, the minister said discussions were held with global cybersecurity firm Cloudflare regarding its possible participation in the ‘KWIN City’ project and future expansion opportunities in Karnataka. The state government has assured the company of the required support for its plans.
Cloudflare’s Global Strategy Head, Stephanie Cohen, praised Karnataka as one of the world’s leading destinations for attracting advanced and emerging technologies, Patil added.
