iPhone users making the switch to Samsung Galaxy devices will quickly notice major differences between iOS and One UI, from navigation gestures to interface design. But one of the most striking contrasts lies in how both brands handle biometric security.
Apple and Samsung take completely different routes when it comes to authentication. Samsung Galaxy phones primarily use in display fingerprint scanners, while Apple has relied on Face ID, its signature face recognition technology, for several years.
If you are coming from an iPhone, you already know that Apple devices no longer include fingerprint scanners. On the other hand, Galaxy phones place the fingerprint sensor at the center of their security setup, making it the default authentication method for most users.
Do Samsung phones have a feature similar to Face ID?
Yes, but not in the same way. Samsung’s One UI offers face recognition as an option for unlocking your device, but unlike Apple’s Face ID, it works using the regular selfie camera instead of advanced depth sensors.
Apple’s Face ID captures a 3D scan of the user’s face using infrared and multiple sensors, making it highly secure and accurate. In contrast, Samsung’s face recognition is a simpler 2D system that may be slower or less reliable in low light.
Still, if you prefer the convenience of facial unlocking, you can enable it by going to:
Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Screen lock and biometrics > Face recognition.
Samsung recommends combining both biometric methods for better flexibility and security. While face recognition can unlock the device from the lock screen, the fingerprint sensor works even when the screen is off, such as directly from the Always On Display.
Users can double tap the AOD to wake the phone and unlock it with face recognition, or simply use the fingerprint scanner to access the device instantly.
Although Samsung’s face recognition may not match Apple’s Face ID in speed or sophistication, the combination of fingerprint and facial authentication offers a balanced and customizable security experience for Galaxy users.
