Nissan Ramps Up Self-Driving Car Development Amid Industry Struggles

Japanese automaker Nissan is developing vehicles with self-driving technology as part of efforts to revive its struggling auto business.

In a recent demonstration of the technology created by British company Wayve, a Nissan Ariya sedan equipped with 11 cameras, five radars, and a next-generation LiDAR sensor navigated downtown Tokyo, stopping for red lights, pedestrians, and other vehicles at intersections. Nissan has indicated that the technology is expected to be available by 2027, though specific models and further details have not been revealed.

The autonomous vehicle market is already competitive, with projections estimating it could reach $2 trillion by 2030, driven by advances in artificial intelligence, sensor technologies, and data processing capabilities.

Japan’s leading automaker Toyota Motor Corp. has partnered with Waymo, Google’s self-driving technology, which has also begun testing in Japan in collaboration with a local cab company. Other automakers exploring autonomous driving include Honda, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and even companies outside the traditional auto industry, such as Amazon and its subsidiary Zoox.

Nissan’s push into self-driving vehicles comes amid broader challenges in the Japanese auto sector. The company has been hit hard by President Donald Trump’s tariffs, resulting in job cuts and the appointment of a new chief executive, Ivan Espinosa, to lead the turnaround. Nissan, known for models like the March subcompact, Leaf electric cars, and the Infiniti luxury brand, posted losses for the April to June period following a year of red ink.

By investing in autonomous technology, Nissan aims to reposition itself in a highly competitive market while addressing the pressures of evolving consumer expectations and global trade challenges.
