A new type of personal home assistant is being introduced by American Norwegian robotics company 1X Technologies. The company has revealed NEO, a humanoid robot designed to help with daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, carrying groceries and having simple conversations.
1X Technologies was founded by Bernt Bornich and was previously known as Halodi Robotics before rebranding in 2022. The company says its goal is to create general purpose robots that can work independently in real environments rather than only in research or industrial spaces.
NEO is the most advanced robot the company has built so far. It weighs about 30 kilograms. It can lift more than 68 kilograms and carry around 25 kilograms. The robot’s exterior is soft and can be customized in Tan Gray or Dark Brown colors. It also wears a knit suit and shoes to help it look more natural inside homes.
The robot operates quietly at 22 decibels which is quieter than most common home appliances. Its hands offer flexible movement due to 22 degrees of freedom and its soft polymer body is made with 3D lattice structures. With the company’s Tendon Drive actuator system NEO is designed to move smoothly and safely around people.
NEO supports WiFi Bluetooth and 5G connectivity. It has three speakers placed in its chest and pelvis allowing it to serve as an entertainment device. The robot uses a large language model to recognize speech understand when someone is talking to it and respond naturally. Its vision system can identify objects such as cooking ingredients and suggest recipes. It also remembers past interactions so it can adjust how it helps the user.
Users can assign chores to NEO through voice commands or buttons and professional trainers from 1X Technologies can teach the robot custom tasks. The company plans to start delivering NEO to early buyers in the United States in 2026 with wider availability expected in 2027. The price is $20,000 for early access and there is also a $499 monthly subscription option.
Some units may still rely on remote operation while the robot’s autonomy continues to improve. There are still challenges involving cost safety and regulation. However industry experts believe that humanoid service robots could become a major global market in the coming decade.
