Nearly 2,000 Indians Trapped in Cybercrime Operations in Myanmar

Around 2,000 Indian nationals are currently caught up in cybercrime operations in Myawaddy, a region near the Myanmar-Thailand border, notorious for being controlled by armed militia groups. Many of these individuals were lured by fraudulent job offers and are now forced to participate in online scams targeting victims across India and the United States.

Although some have been rescued, the Indian embassy has warned that the full scale of the scam is much larger, with countless victims still unaware of the risks they face. Consular officials are working tirelessly to evacuate citizens who have sought assistance, but those willingly taking part in these fraudulent operations are not considered victims, but criminals.

The embassy has urged job-seekers to be cautious when considering offers in countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. “Verify employment offers carefully before traveling, as those involved in scams may face serious legal consequences,” officials warned.

Myawaddy has become a notorious hub for these scams, where workers, often coerced or trapped, are forced into cyber fraud. Many are stuck in scam centers, unable to escape unless they can pay hefty ransoms. With the region being controlled by lawless warlords and militia, rescue efforts have proven difficult, but consular officials are doing their best to help those in need.

In response to global pressure, Thai authorities have taken steps to cut off electricity, internet, and fuel supplies to areas in Myanmar that support these operations. Additionally, China has urged Thailand to shut down cross-border power supplies fueling these cybercrime syndicates. However, despite these measures, the situation remains critical, with many Indian nationals trapped and unable to flee.

While at least 150 individuals have been identified as victims, the true number is believed to be much higher, as many are voluntarily participating in these scams without contacting authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs is working to assist those who have requested help.

On February 18, three Indian nationals escaped from a scam center in Myawaddy and were aided by the embassy to reach Yangon. They are now being processed for repatriation to India. However, due to the lawless nature of the region, large-scale rescue operations remain a significant challenge. Since June 2022, over 600 Indians have been rescued from scam operations across Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.
