The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with Future Shift Labs (FSL), has launched the YASHODA AI initiative in Assam, aiming to build a digitally secure and AI-aware society. The two-day campaign began on Wednesday at the DGP Office in Ulubari, Guwahati.
This initiative is focused on empowering law enforcement officers and youth by educating them on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the context of cybercrime, public safety, and digital behaviour.
The first day of the campaign was dedicated to a session for police officials, where the role of AI in crime prevention and public safety was thoroughly discussed. The session included training on how criminal behaviour is evolving in the digital age and how AI tools can be effectively used in policing and investigation.
Police officers were introduced to various digital tools, including ChatGPT, the NCW Women Safety App, Cyber Dost, and platforms for detecting deepfakes. These resources are intended to help them handle cybercrimes more efficiently, address misinformation, and strengthen community engagement.
During the workshop, officials actively participated in discussions around real-life case studies involving AI scams, digital impersonation, and misinformation. Key themes included ethical use of technology, the importance of data privacy, and responsible AI usage within police work.
NCW Chairperson Smt. Vijaya K. Rahatkar, addressing the attendees through a message, said, “When police officers understand technology, they do not just react to crime—they prevent it. YASHODA AI is about building confidence, clarity, and capability in the digital age.”
Nitin Narang, Founder of Future Shift Labs, added, “AI policing is no longer futuristic—it is already here. The better our forces understand these tools, the more empowered and effective they become in safeguarding society.”
The second day of the campaign, scheduled for August 7, will take place at B. Borooah College, Guwahati, and will focus on college students. The session will discuss digital ethics, online safety, AI’s role in shaping careers and education, and how platforms like ChatGPT and Cyber Dost can guide young users through online challenges.
In a media interaction, Chairperson Rahatkar spoke about her visit to Assam and her ongoing discussions with state officials on efforts towards women’s empowerment. “I have come to Assam on behalf of the National Women’s Commission for a two-day visit. This morning, we held meetings with the Chief Secretary of Assam and other key officials to understand the state’s efforts towards women’s empowerment and how joint initiatives with the Central Government are being implemented effectively.”
She also highlighted the growing concern over cybercrimes targeting women, including deepfakes, economic fraud, and misuse of personal images. “Women are suffering immensely from cybercrimes—deepfakes and misuse of images can devastate their lives. That’s why we’re organising this AI awareness program with the police, training them to respond to and prevent such crimes.”
Reflecting on recent crime statistics, Rahatkar shared encouraging news. “If we look back from 2020 to now, in 2025, we can see a positive trend. This is a good sign and reflects improvement in preventive mechanisms.”
She concluded by expressing her intent to meet with MSME women entrepreneurs, Self-Help Groups, and rural women’s organisations as part of her visit.
