Navi Mumbai International Airport Set to Open by September End

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is all set to take off operations by the end of September this year, making it the second international aviation hub in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Flyers will soon see tickets marked with the code ‘NMI’ for this upcoming world-class airport.

Spread over 1160 hectares, the airport stands out with its two parallel runways placed 1.55 kilometers apart. This major infrastructure development will make MMR the first region in India to have two functioning international airports.

Located in Ulwe, the airport will offer easy access to Mumbai, North MMR, Panvel and nearby areas. The state’s chief minister recently confirmed that the first passenger flight from the new airport will depart by September 30.

While domestic flights are scheduled to begin post monsoon, international services are planned for mid 2026. Work is also underway to ensure strong multi-modal connectivity through road, rail, metro and sea routes. The Atal Setu bridge has already reduced travel time from South Mumbai to just 40 minutes.

The airport project, which dates back to planning discussions in the late 1990s, is now taking final shape with a cost of ₹16700 crore. It is being described as India’s most advanced greenfield airport and second in size only to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Airlines like IndiGo and Akasa Air are preparing to start operations from the new airport. IndiGo plans to run 36 flights daily while Akasa will begin with 15. Other airlines are also planning direct routes to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

Initial operations will support 8 to 10 aircraft movements per hour, which will gradually increase to 30 by April 2026. The runway system can ultimately handle up to 45 movements per hour.

Navi Mumbai International Airport will ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which is currently among the busiest single-runway airports in the world. The new facility will begin with a capacity of 20 million passengers a year and expand to 90 million by 2040.

With four passenger terminals, a general aviation terminal and a modern cargo terminal, NMIA promises to deliver a seamless, tech-driven experience blending Indian culture and global standards.
