Navi Mumbai Airport to Begin Operations in September

The much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to begin operations in September, Industries Minister Uday Samant informed the Legislative Assembly. Although the initial target was the end of August, minor delays have shifted the launch by a few weeks.

“About 95% of the construction work is complete. The airport will begin operations within the next two months,” said Samant, adding that the first phase will start with limited services. The second phase will roll out a few months after the initial operations begin.

Samant shared this update on airport operations while responding to a long-duration debate on investment in Maharashtra. He stated that 87% of the Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed by the Maharashtra government with companies have been realised, claiming it is the highest success rate in the country.

He added that over the past three years, the state has signed MoUs worth ₹1.80 lakh crore, ₹7 lakh crore, and ₹15.72 lakh crore respectively. Out of the 46 companies involved, land has been allotted to 15, and allocation is in process for seven more. As per company requests, 20 others will receive plots soon, while four industrial units are close to starting operations.

Samant also claimed that Maharashtra has attracted more foreign direct investment than any other state under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Highlighting balanced development across regions, Samant said, “Gadchiroli is emerging as a steel manufacturing hub with ₹1 lakh crore worth of investments. Under the CM Employment Guarantee Scheme, over 62,000 industrial units have been set up, which is six times more than during the previous government’s tenure.”

He also noted Maharashtra is among the top three states implementing the Centre’s Vishwakarma scheme aimed at supporting artisans and skilled tradespeople.

Addressing concerns about the financial condition of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Samant said the civic body’s liabilities have reached ₹2.32 lakh crore, marking a 22% rise over the past year. He denied that the increase was due to mismanagement.
