Nasscom has announced the launch of Makers Honor, a recognition programme aimed at celebrating the engineers and developers powering India’s $224 billion technology export sector. The initiative seeks to spotlight the technical talent behind the nation’s software industry, covering fields such as artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, open-source innovation and technology for social impact.
A council of industry veterans, including ISRO scientist Nandini Harinath and Persistent Systems founder Anand Deshpande, will guide the programme. GitHub has partnered as the outreach collaborator. Other members of the council include Zerodha Chief Technology Officer Kailash Nadh and IdeaForge Chief Executive and Co-founder Ankit Mehta.
“Some of the greatest leaps in science and society are made not in the spotlight, but in silence. The initiative from Nasscom is to celebrate minds who push the boundaries of possibility and bring science and technology closer to everyday life,” said Nandini Harinath.
Anand Deshpande emphasised that engineering is about solving the right problems with creativity and compassion, describing the programme as a tribute to builders whose impact goes beyond code. Kailash Nadh called it “a refreshing break from the Indian industry’s relentless techno-business obsession.”
Ankit Mehta highlighted that Indian engineers have consistently met global challenges with ingenuity and resilience, often without recognition. He said this initiative will inspire young innovators and affirm the role of engineers as “architects of a better, more inclusive future.”
Martin Woodward, Vice-President, Developer Relations at GitHub, noted that with over 18 million developers building on GitHub in India, the country is the second-largest contributor to open source globally. He said the partnership will honour the individuals driving this technological revolution from across India’s cities, towns and villages.
Co-curated by author and journalist Pankaj Mishra, the initiative will recognise innovation across areas such as Viksit Bharat, sustainability, healthcare, national digital systems security, and India-first open-source AI and ML frameworks. It will also highlight pioneers in deep tech, AI, space, life sciences, and digital solutions tackling societal and environmental challenges.
