NASSCOM Calls Out Facebook and Amazon on DEI Issues

The leader of NASSCOM, the top organization for India’s IT sector, is dissatisfied with major global tech companies like Facebook, Amazon, and Google reducing their diversity initiatives. Sindhu Gangadharan, who chairs NASSCOM and serves as managing director of SAP India, called the cutbacks by firms such as Meta and Amazon “unfortunate” and urged these companies to maintain their fundamental values.

At a recent event, Gangadharan highlighted the importance of these corporations remaining committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), pointing out that achieving global success necessitates such dedication.

She stated, “It is absolutely unfortunate that certain messages out there from large companies are mainly driven by political motivations, less about companies going back on their core cultures.”

She expressed worry that statements from leading tech companies could lead to a “negative ripple effect” around the world.

In an interview with PTI during the annual NASSCOM Technology Leadership Forum, she reiterated the need for companies to stick to their core principles, especially in light of growing majoritarian sentiments in India.

Nasscom leader Gangadharan said, “We have to stay true to our values and be the role model. When companies become successful and have stuck to core values, that sets the precedence for the rest. And that is super important.”

She affirmed that both SAP India and the Indian tech ecosystem remain committed to diversity initiatives. “We are inclusive; we bring the best to the table. It doesn’t matter what gender, belief system, or faith… when you have deeply ingrained value systems, behaviors will follow. That is my strong belief,” she said.

Leader of Nasscom Gangadharan highlighted that the need for diversity stems not only from a commitment to inclusion but also from customer requirements. To succeed globally, companies must ensure diversity is embedded in product development, data modeling, and algorithm training, she explained.

“How can it be that your leadership or your development or product team is not diverse? For me, it is as fundamental as that,” she concluded.
