NASA’s Artemis 2 set to send astronauts around the moon after decades

Marking a major milestone in space exploration, NASA is preparing to launch Artemis 2, the first crewed mission to travel around the moon since the Apollo era.

The mission is scheduled for April 1, 2026, and will lift off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A crew of 4 astronauts will embark on a journey lasting around 10 days, travelling around the moon and returning to Earth aboard the Orion capsule.

Artemis 2 is significant not only for its mission goals but also for its diverse crew. Commander Reid Wiseman will lead the team, joined by Christina Koch, who will become the first woman on a lunar crew. Victor Glover will be the first person of color on such a mission, while Jeremy Hansen will represent Canada.

The mission will focus on testing critical systems required for future lunar missions. These tests are essential as NASA prepares for its broader objective of landing humans on the moon again by 2028.

Artemis 2 is expected to play a key role in shaping the next phase of human space exploration, building on past achievements while preparing for more advanced missions in the coming years.
