NASA has successfully restored communication with Space Vehicle 1 (SV1) of the TRACERS mission after a period of signal loss, the agency confirmed. Mission engineers are now carrying out recovery procedures to bring the spacecraft back to full operations while analysing the cause of the communication issue.
The TRACERS mission, short for Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites, studies Earth’s magnetosphere and the flow of energy within the system. The mission involves two satellites working together to track how magnetic fields and charged particles interact in the upper atmosphere. When SV1 lost contact, it created gaps in key scientific data, making its recovery vital to achieving the mission’s objectives.
According to mission specialists, the immediate focus is on assessing critical onboard systems including power, navigation and communications. Engineers are also testing scientific instruments to confirm they can resume normal data collection. If any faults are identified, corrective measures will be taken to stabilise operations and prevent further disruptions.
While communication has been restored, the spacecraft is not yet fully operational. Several steps remain, such as downloading telemetry, verifying instrument calibration and checking subsystem responses. Only once these milestones are achieved will TRACERS return to full-scale scientific activity.
NASA stated that regaining contact with SV1 is a significant step forward, though recovery efforts are still in progress. Additional updates will be shared with the public and the scientific community as diagnostics continue. Despite the challenges of diagnosing spacecraft from orbit, officials remain optimistic about SV1’s swift return to service.
