Artemis Watch 2.0 turns smartwatch into coding lab for young learners

As space exploration captures global attention again, a new programmable smartwatch is bringing that excitement into the hands of young learners.

The Artemis Watch 2.0, launched alongside the Artemis II mission, is a $129 smartwatch designed to help kids learn coding by building and customizing their own wearable apps. Inspired by NASA’s lunar mission, the device arrives fully assembled and ready to use.

At its core is a dual-core ESP32 microcontroller, supported by a full-colour LCD display, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, and temperature sensor. The watch connects to iOS and Android devices via Bluetooth, enabling activity tracking and notifications.

What sets the device apart is its open-source software. Users can program it using Python, CircuitBlocks, or the Arduino IDE. This allows them to design watch faces, create apps, and modify how sensors behave.

Unlike most kids’ smartwatches that offer limited customization, the Artemis Watch 2.0 provides full access to its software stack. Beginners can start with block-based coding, while advanced users can move to full programming without restrictions. The firmware is hosted on GitHub, removing any proprietary limitations.

The ESP32 processor supports real-time processing of sensor data and Bluetooth connectivity. This enables users to build projects such as step counters, temperature trackers, or compass-based alerts.

The compact design measures 1.77 x 0.5 x 2.76 inches, making it suitable for younger users. It runs on a rechargeable Li-Po battery with USB-C charging. The recommended age is 9 and above, with no assembly or soldering required.

CircuitMess also offers bundled options. The watch is available as part of a Mars Exploration Bundle priced at $399, which includes the Perseverance Rover kit at a 23% discount. A Collector’s Bundle with 4 strap designs is priced at $149.

With over 300,000 kits sold globally, CircuitMess is positioning the Artemis Watch 2.0 as both an educational tool and a gateway to hands-on learning inspired by space exploration.
