NASA InSight Discovers Remains of Ancient Planets Hidden Inside Mars

Researchers have found unusual structures deep within Mars that may be the preserved remains of ancient planets. A study published on August 28 in a science journal revealed that these dense formations inside the Martian mantle could date back 4.5 billion years, from a time when massive collisions were shaping the early solar system. Scientists believe these blobs are leftovers from protoplanets that never developed into full planets and have remained preserved within Mars’ mantle.

The discovery was made using seismic data from NASA’s InSight lander, which studied the planet between 2018 and 2022. The mission recorded more than 1,300 Marsquakes, allowing researchers to map the interior of the Red Planet in detail. The data revealed dense patches within the mantle, suggesting they were formed from materials that originated elsewhere and were buried deep during ancient planetary impacts.

According to the research, the absence of tectonic activity on Mars has helped preserve these relics for billions of years. Unlike Earth, where geological activity constantly reshapes the mantle and surface, Mars’ interior has remained relatively unchanged. This has allowed structures such as these to survive and act as records of early planetary history.

Scientists explained that Earth’s dynamic geology would have erased such formations long ago, but on Mars, the immobile mantle has kept them intact. The presence of these blobs gives researchers the clearest view so far of the hidden layers beneath the Martian surface and provides insights into how planets formed in the young solar system.

By mapping Mars’ interior, InSight has revealed that the planet acts like a natural time capsule. These preserved structures offer rare evidence of ancient impacts and the early processes that shaped not only Mars but also the solar system itself.
