NASA confirms live coverage for IMAP space weather mission launch

NASA has confirmed that the launch of the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe mission will be broadcast live for viewers around the world. The mission, known as IMAP, aims to deliver a deeper understanding of solar wind and its impact near the boundary regions of the solar system.

The launch is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 7:32 a.m. EDT from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which will carry the spacecraft into orbit, was seen on the launch pad during a recent test. Live coverage will begin at 6:40 a.m. on NASA+, Amazon Prime, and other platforms, allowing global audiences to witness the milestone event.

IMAP will travel nearly one million miles to Lagrange Point 1, a stable position in space where it will measure how energy and particles from the Sun affect the heliosphere. According to NASA, IMAP will also work alongside two other missions, the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory and the Space Weather Follow On Lagrange 1, operated by NOAA. Together, these missions are designed to strengthen research on cosmic radiation and improve the protection of both robotic and human explorers.

The Carruthers Geocorona Observatory will focus on Earth’s outer atmosphere by observing ultraviolet light, building on earlier findings from Apollo 16. This will provide fresh insight into how Earth responds to space weather events.

Meanwhile, NOAA’s SWFO L1 mission, also positioned at Lagrange Point 1, will provide real time space weather observations to assist satellite operators, communication networks, and power grid systems. “NOAA’s SWFO L1 mission, located at Lagrange Point 1, is a specialised space weather observing and nowcasting mission that supplies the observational resources to satellite, communication, and power grid operators,” NASA stated.

Together, IMAP, Carruthers, and SWFO L1 represent a combined effort to expand scientific knowledge of space weather while enhancing the safety and resilience of Earth’s infrastructure against solar activity.
