PM Narendra Modi hails Google’s $15 billion AI hub in Visakhapatnam as a step towards Viksit Bharat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Google’s announcement of a $15 billion Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, calling it a major step towards building a Viksit Bharat. The announcement marks one of the largest technology investments in India’s history and highlights the country’s growing importance in global AI and digital innovation.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister said, “This multi-faceted investment that includes gigawatt-scale data centre infrastructure, aligns with our vision to build a Viksit Bharat. It will be a powerful force in democratising technology. It will also ensure AI for All, delivering cutting-edge tools to our citizens, boosting our digital economy and securing India’s place as a global technology leader.”

The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai during the ‘Bharat AI Shakti’ event held in New Delhi. Pichai revealed that Google will invest USD 15 billion over the next five years to establish the gigawatt-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam. He described the initiative as a “landmark development” that will make the coastal city a global centre for AI research and Google’s largest AI hub outside the United States.

In a post on X, Pichai explained, “This hub combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. Through it, we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”

The new AI hub will integrate advanced compute infrastructure, renewable energy systems, and a subsea cable network to support India’s expanding AI ecosystem. It is expected to create thousands of high-skilled jobs, boost research and development, and strengthen India’s digital infrastructure.

By housing data locally, the AI hub will not only serve India but also extend its capabilities to other parts of Asia and beyond, reinforcing India’s role as a major player in the global AI economy.
