Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving from experimentation to large-scale enterprise adoption, reshaping how industries operate and deliver services. During a keynote address at the India AI Impact Summit, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Group, outlined an expanded AI strategy covering chips, industry platforms, and infrastructure alongside a strategic collaboration with OpenAI.
Speaking at the event, Chandrasekaran highlighted AI’s transformative potential across enterprises and public services. “It is, in my opinion, the biggest opportunity for the tech sector and the IT industry,” he said. He emphasised that the IT industry’s “real value is the context: An understanding of every enterprise’s business and technology landscape and make the right technology work inside the processes and the ecosystem, the supplier, customer and all the other connections an enterprise has.” He added that integrating AI agents into workflows will help organisations reimagine processes and drive large-scale transformation.
The group also plans to develop domain-focused AI chips, starting with the automotive sector. Under the partnership, Tata Consultancy Services will combine its delivery capabilities with OpenAI’s advanced AI platforms for internal deployment, product development, and global go-to-market initiatives. Employees across the Tata ecosystem will gain access to Enterprise ChatGPT, while TCS will use OpenAI’s Codex tools to improve software engineering outcomes.
Beyond internal adoption, both companies will jointly help enterprises deploy and scale AI solutions globally. The collaboration also includes building industry-specific agentic AI solutions tailored to different sectors. Chandrasekaran noted that TCS and Tata Communications are already working on AI operating systems designed for industries worldwide.
Infrastructure development forms another key part of the agreement. TCS’ HyperVault unit and OpenAI have entered a multi-year arrangement to build AI infrastructure in India, beginning with 100 MW capacity and the potential to scale up to 1 GW, supporting next-generation AI workloads.
“This deep collaboration between OpenAI and Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era,” Chandrasekaran said.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, added, “India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its talent, ambition, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future. Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it.”
The collaboration will also include social-impact initiatives through the OpenAI Foundation and TCS, focusing on AI training for youth, technology toolkits for non-profits, and programmes aimed at improving livelihoods at scale.
