Elon Musk hints Grok is nearing Midjourney level in AI visuals

Elon Musk has sparked a fresh debate about AI creativity after highlighting that his platform’s AI, Grok, is catching up to Midjourney in visual quality. The conversation began when a designer and creative ambassador at xAI shared two side-by-side images, one generated by Grok Imagine and the other by Midjourney. Both visuals were sharp, vibrant, and almost identical in quality.

“I never thought I’d say this, but… Grok might have reached Midjourney-level aesthetics. Just try it and tell me what you think,” the designer wrote. Musk replied simply, “Getting there,” hinting that Grok could soon rival the established leader in AI-generated art.

Grok vs Midjourney: Key Differences

Grok and Midjourney serve different creative purposes. Grok, developed by xAI and built into X, is a conversational AI that produces text, summaries and humour, offering real-time data and a witty tone. It comes in SuperGrok and SuperGrok Heavy plans but is limited to text only. It uses real-time platform data and adds personality, humour, and wit to interactions. Users employ it for quick summaries, entertainment, and casual conversations.

Midjourney, on the other hand, is a text-to-image AI accessible through Discord. It turns text prompts into detailed digital artwork, known for cinematic visuals, rich textures and painterly effects. Designers, artists and marketers often rely on it for high-quality creative outputs.  It is available on Discord, is a text-to-image AI that creates high-quality digital art and concept visuals. It is known for its exceptional visual quality and offers Basic, Standard, and Pro subscription plans, but cannot generate text.

Subscription tiers

Midjourney offers plans starting at $10 per month for 200 image generations. Standard ($30) and Pro ($60) tiers include faster rendering, video generation, and private mode. Grok provides a Basic plan with voice features and Aurora image model access. SuperGrok at ₹700 per month adds expanded memory, Grok 4 access, and AI companions. The top-tier SuperGrok Heavy at ₹29,900 per month gives early access to Grok 4 models and extended context memory.

As AI-generated creativity evolves, the competition between Grok and Midjourney highlights how text and visual imagination are shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
