Mumbai’s Third Airport Project Begins Near Vadhavan Port

A new airport project has taken off in Maharashtra with the launch of a pre-feasibility study for a greenfield airport near the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar. The project is part of a major push to develop a multimodal logistics ecosystem combining air, sea, rail and road transport.

The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd has appointed a joint venture between Grant Thornton and Nippon Koei India to conduct the study. The final report is expected in six to nine months. Site visits are already completed and initial groundwork has started.

The proposed Vadhavan Airport is being planned to support the under-construction Vadhavan Port, a deep-draft, all-weather facility on Maharashtra’s western coast. The port is part of the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor and is expected to boost India’s container handling capacity by 23.2 million TEUs, aiming to position India as a key player in global maritime trade.

The airport will provide seamless air connectivity for cargo and passengers, particularly serving nearby industrial hubs like Bhiwandi. This integrated approach is designed to reduce transport costs, improve logistics efficiency and support the goals of India’s national logistics policy.

Officials say the airport will help ease pressure on Mumbai’s current airports, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Navi Mumbai Airport. It will also contribute to economic growth in the Palghar region by generating employment and improving regional connectivity.

The feasibility study will assess the technical, financial and environmental viability of the airport. The findings will help the government decide the next steps. The project is part of a larger vision to make Maharashtra a leading logistics and trade hub.

Dedicated rail and road links are also being planned to connect the airport with Vadhavan Port and surrounding areas, ensuring smooth movement of goods and people. This strategic coordination between different transport modes will create a robust and future-ready logistics network.

The Vadhavan Airport project reflects India’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure while decentralising growth from crowded urban centres and unlocking new opportunities in emerging regions like Palghar.
