Mumbai’s Coastal Vision Nears Completion As Final Underpass Set To Open

Mumbai’s grand Coastal Road project is on the verge of its final flourish, with the last stretch — a 550-metre underpass connecting Prabhadevi to Worli — expected to be operational before the end of May. This vital link will soon offer motorists smooth access to the Coastal Road, marking a transformative moment in the city’s evolving traffic story.

Once this underpass is open, the Coastal Road will shift into full gear, becoming accessible to vehicles round the clock within fifteen days. With construction vehicles pulling out, the stretch will breathe freely, just as the promenade nears its final touches.

“The underpass is ready, and we’ve approached the RTO for a formal opening date,” shared a senior official from the Coastal Road department. “It provides a direct route for vehicles from Prabhadevi and Dadar, guiding them beneath Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Road into the Worli interchange, with access north towards the Bandra Sea Link or southwards.”

This final piece is more than just an infrastructure element — it’s a vital connection in the BMC’s larger plan to weave a high-speed network through Mumbai’s arterial routes, including future links like the Sewri-Worli corridor.

Alongside Coastal Road project, the long-awaited seaside promenade is also racing toward its June 15 deadline. Once coastal road complete, it will allow uninterrupted traffic and put an end to the movement of construction vehicles on the stretch — a quiet but significant milestone.

In a parallel development, BMC has turned its attention to the excavated area behind Tata Garden, near Amarsons Garden, which was meant for a two-level underground parking structure. Designed to house 246 cars, the project has faced fierce objections from Breach Candy residents over fears of worsening local traffic.

“With the monsoon approaching, the risk of rain and high tide turning the pit into a breeding ground for mosquitoes is real,” said another official. “As the parking facility is unlikely to proceed, we plan to refill the site with reclaimed materials.”

Work on this parking lot has been on hold since October following consistent pushback from the community. Now, nature’s urgency and the city’s priorities seem ready to reshape that space once again.
