Mumbai Man Loses Rs. 2.4 Cr to Insurance Cyber Scam

Fraudsters posing as representatives of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), NSDL, NPCI, and major banks defrauded a 65-year-old retired man from Shivaji Park online. They defrauded him of Rs 2.36 crore under the guise of assisting him in getting his expired insurance coverage back.

The police claim that the nightmare of a retired professional started on November 5, 2024, when he got a voicemail on WhatsApp from a guy posing as Dinesh Chaturvedi, an IRDA employee. The caller said that he could assist in recovering premiums from seven of the victim’s insurance policies that had expired.

Additionally, the caller provided a phony corporate ID card. The complainant was then directed to send an email with the details of his insurance and pay a processing charge of Rs 49,606 after that. He sent the funds to a bank account that the con artists shared since he was sure he would get his Rs 24.8 lakh back.

Shortly after, he was instructed to pay Rs 6 lakh in taxes, which he did. He moved Rs 2.36 crore over time to several bank accounts that the scammers had supplied.

The complainant realized he had been deceived on May 19, 2025, after several follow-ups had produced no results and no reimbursement had been sent. He made many reports to the Central Cyber Cell police station and called the national cybercrime hotline (1930). A legal complaint against those responsible for the cyber fraud has been filed.
