Mumbai local trains step up checks to stop fake railway tickets

Railway officials have moved quickly after a rising number of forged tickets cases were detected on the Mumbai suburban rail network.

On Friday, the Central Railway and Western Railway jointly announced stricter enforcement steps to curb the use of fake season tickets. Under the new rule, commuters using online season tickets must now carry and produce the same identity card that was used during booking. The details on the ID must match the information printed on the season ticket.

In addition to this, fortress checks will be carried out on AC local trains. This means ticket checking staff will board entire trains at once to verify every passenger’s ticket. Railway authorities have also asked the Government Railway Police to fast track forgery cases so that strong action can be taken against those involved.

Ticket checking drives will be intensified across both the Central and Western Railway suburban networks. Special ticket checking squads will be deployed at stations and inside trains to identify and prevent irregular travel and the use of counterfeit tickets.

Rail authorities have issued a clear warning to passengers against using any illegal or fraudulent methods to obtain or show fake travel tickets. Those found guilty will face strict action under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act. These include Sections 318 2, 336 3, 336 4, 340 1, 340 2, and 3 5, which cover cheating, forgery, and related crimes.

Punishment for these offences can include heavy fines and imprisonment of up to seven years, or both. Officials stressed that such strong legal steps are necessary to protect genuine commuters and to maintain fairness and safety on the busy suburban rail system.

Passengers are advised to carry valid tickets and proper identity documents at all times to avoid inconvenience during the enhanced checks.
