Mumbai is set to host the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Goregaon’s Film City

With a ₹400 crore investment from the national government, Mumbai will host the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) in Goregaon’s Film City. At the opening of the World Audio-Visual & Entertainment Summit 2025 (WAVES 2025), which took place on Sunday at Sushma Swaraj Bhavan in New Delhi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement. The institute is anticipated to establish Mumbai as a global center for creative technology and would be modeled after the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Fadnavis stated that the IICT would serve as a leading centre for innovation in the creative technology industry. “This project will not be limited to Maharashtra but will become a milestone for India’s creative technology sector. IICT will not just be an educational institution but a leading centre driving innovation in the creative technology industry. It will elevate India to the global stage in this domain,” he said.

Filmmaking, digital content, visual effects (VFX), animation, audio-visual storytelling, media innovation, and Web 3.0 technologies are just a few of the creative domains that IICT will concentrate on. The institute has been given property in Goregaon’s Film City by the Maharashtra government.

Fadnavis also highlighted that the institute would provide a global platform for India’s creative sector. “Just as Davos is crucial for the financial sector, this institute will create a global brand for the creative technology sector,” he said.

The announcement coincided with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the WAVES 2025 program between the Maharashtra government and the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Maharashtra has been given the opportunity to host the summit, which will be held at the Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai from May 1–4, 2025.

More than 100 nations are anticipated to participate in WAVES 2025, which will be a significant platform for experts in the fields of broadcasting, cinema, animation, gaming, digital media, music, advertising, and social media. Three major projects will be showcased during the summit: Creatosphere, a collaborative environment for exchanging ideas; WAVES Accelerator, a center to encourage emerging technologies; and WAVES Bazaar, a marketplace for investment possibilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was thanked by Fadnavis for giving Maharashtra the opportunity to host WAVES 2025. He pointed out that by establishing IICT and hosting the WAVES 2025 conference, Mumbai—which is already a significant hub for Bollywood and the entertainment sector—would further solidify its place in the global creative economy.
