A 62-year-old housewife from Bandra, Mumbai, fell victim to cyber fraudsters, losing nearly ₹8 crore.
The fraud unfolded over a period of two months, starting with a WhatsApp message from an unknown sender. This fraudster claimed to be associated with a reputable finance company and informed her about lucrative stock market investment opportunities.
She was provided with another contact number for a “senior officer” and a link to a website. Subsequently, she was added to a WhatsApp group where she interacted with another fraudster who also claimed to work for the company. They all appeared very professional.
Believing in their legitimacy, she transferred substantial amounts of money to various bank accounts. According to reports, she sent a total of ₹7.88 crore.
However, when she attempted to withdraw her funds, they requested an additional 10%, which raised her suspicions. It was then that she realized she had been deceived.
She lodged a complaint on the cybercrime portal, and the police have since registered a case and initiated an investigation.
