MTN announced that hackers accessed some customers’ personal data but assured that its main business operations remained unaffected and fully functional during the incident.
The company stated there was no proof that the breach impacted its core network, billing systems, or financial services, all of which continued to operate normally.
MTN acknowledged the hackers’ claims of accessing data from part of its systems but emphasized that there is no evidence of compromised subscriber accounts or mobile wallets. The operator has reported the incident to the relevant authorities in South Africa to help track the culprits and has informed affected customers. MTN did not reveal the number of subscribers affected by the breach.
“The privacy of information is our top priority, and MTN remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and the trust placed in us by our customers and other stakeholders,” the company said. “We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully.”
