Mozilla Firefox is giving users the choice to use AI-powered search directly in their browser by adding Perplexity’s AI answer engine as a search option. Unlike other browsers that embed AI deeply into the web experience, Firefox lets users swap their default search engine for an AI alternative.
The company had previously tested Perplexity in select markets, including the U.S., U.K., and Germany. Following positive feedback, Mozilla is now making the AI search option available to desktop users globally, with plans to roll it out on mobile devices in the coming months.
Once activated, Perplexity offers a conversational search experience, delivering answers with citations instead of traditional lists of web links. Users can access the AI search via the unified search button in the address bar and can also set it as their default search provider in Firefox’s settings.
Mozilla noted that the pilot program’s success could pave the way for additional AI answer engines or search options in the future. Perplexity was chosen in part because the company does not share or sell users’ personal data, aligning with Firefox’s privacy-focused approach.
In addition to the AI search integration, Mozilla is rolling out browser profiles to all users. This feature allows people to switch between different setups, such as work, school, or personal browsing, making it easier to manage multiple online activities.
The company is also continuing to test visual search capabilities with Google Lens for desktop users who have Google set as their default search engine.
With these updates, Firefox aims to give users more flexibility and privacy while exploring AI-powered tools that enhance the browsing experience without compromising data security.
