Mozilla has introduced a new feature called “Shake to Summarise” for the Firefox web browser on iPhones, allowing users to generate AI-powered summaries of webpages. This marks one of the first uses of Apple Intelligence in a third-party app. On iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, the summaries will be created using Apple’s on-device AI model. For older iOS versions, Mozilla’s own cloud-based AI system will power the feature.
How the Feature Works
Mozilla explained that the tool is designed to turn long webpages into quick and easy-to-read highlights. Users can activate it in three ways: by shaking their device, tapping the thunderbolt icon in the address bar, or selecting “Summarise page” from the menu.
The feature currently works only on pages with fewer than 5,000 words, ensuring concise and efficient results. Mozilla also noted that users who do not want accidental triggers can disable the function. Whether it is extracting the essentials from a recipe, checking highlights from a news article, or reviewing a lengthy story before deciding to read in full, “Shake to Summarise” offers a faster way to access key information.
Rollout Details
The feature is being rolled out this week in the United States for Mozilla Firefox iOS app users in English. A wider release in other regions is planned later. The first time users visit a page that supports summarisation, Firefox will display a prompt. The feature can be enabled or turned off at any time from the settings menu.
