Berlin-based startup MOTRO AI has raised €17.1 million in seed funding to accelerate the deployment of its neuroscience-inspired autonomous driving technology across Europe. The round was led by Segenia Capital and eCAPITAL, with support from mobility-focused angel investors. This funding marks a major step toward building the first certified autonomous vehicle fleet tailored to European safety and regulatory standards.
Founded in 2017 by Roy Uhlmann and Adam Bahlke, MOTRO AI has developed a Level 4 autonomous driving system that stands apart from conventional machine learning models. Instead of relying on massive datasets and black-box predictions, their system uses Active Inference, a cognitive architecture inspired by the human brain. This allows vehicles to make structured, transparent decisions—even in unfamiliar traffic scenarios—without needing exhaustive training.
This makes the technology not only safer but also more scalable. The company has already received approval from German authorities to test its vehicles on public roads, excluding highways. Initial deployments will include Mercedes EQV vans equipped with MOTRO’s full autonomy stack and supervised by onboard safety drivers. These drivers are expected to be phased out by 2026.
MOTRO AI CEO Roy Uhlmann emphasized that their system meets stringent European requirements for transparency and traceability, setting it apart from U.S.-based competitors. “In a regulated environment like Europe, trust and compliance are non-negotiable,” said Uhlmann. The company’s solution is designed to be inspectable, measurable, and aligned with public safety expectations.
Looking ahead, MOTRO AI plans to expand its engineering and regulatory teams, deepen partnerships with municipalities, and begin cross-border operations. Their long-term vision is to create a certified, explainable driver system that serves as infrastructure for safe and transparent autonomy across Europe.
