Hyundai Motor Group’s autonomous driving joint venture, Motional, has announced the appointment of artificial intelligence (AI) expert Laura Major as its new Chief Executive Officer. The strategic leadership change underscores Motional’s intensified focus on accelerating AI development as it prepares for the commercial launch of its autonomous driving services next year.
Laura Major, who has served as Motional’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) since 2020, takes the helm at a pivotal time for the company. During her tenure as CTO, Major played a crucial role in the development of the Ioniq 5 robotaxi, a landmark achievement as it became one of the first fully driverless vehicles to be certified under U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). This accomplishment positions Motional at the forefront of autonomous vehicle safety and reliability.
Motional’s primary objective under Major’s leadership will be to significantly advance its AI capabilities to ensure a robust and seamless commercial rollout of its autonomous driving services, anticipated for 2026.
