The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is planning a new tunnel road to link the Mumbai Coastal Road, the upcoming Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train terminal at Bandra Kurla Complex, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2.
This proposed tunnel aims to provide smooth and direct travel for passengers arriving by bullet train or flights, connecting them to South Mumbai’s Marine Drive via the Coastal Road without using congested city roads.
The MMRDA has invited bids to appoint a consultant for a techno economic feasibility study and a detailed project report for the Worli to BKC to airport tunnel system. The consultancy project is estimated at Rs 17 crore and is expected to be completed within seven months, including the monsoon period. The pre bid meeting is scheduled for October 17 and the last date for bid submission is November 6.
Officials said this corridor will become an important underground link between Mumbai’s south and central business districts, reducing pressure on surface roads once the bullet train becomes operational.
This project is part of a larger plan to develop an extensive network of underground corridors in Mumbai, connecting the Coastal Road, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and future east west corridors. The MMRDA is already executing two major tunnels, Thane to Borivali of 11.85 kilometres at Rs 18,838 crore and Orange Gate to Marine Drive of 9.23 kilometres at Rs 9,158 crore. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is also constructing the Goregaon to Mulund Link Road tunnel of 12.2 kilometres.
Meanwhile, the civic body has received two bids from major tunnelling design firms, Amberg Engineering and Meinhardt India, for its citywide multimodal tunnel connectivity project. Once the master plan is approved, the selected consultant will prepare tenders to appoint a contracting agency and act as the project management consultant for the tunnel network expansion across the city.
With both the MMRDA and the civic body advancing separate but complementary tunnelling projects, Mumbai is set to witness one of the largest underground infrastructure developments in the country, aimed at easing traffic congestion and linking the city’s sea, rail, and air transport networks.
