Strengthening its manufacturing presence in India, Mitsubishi Electric India has inaugurated a new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility in Gummudipoondi, around 40 km north-west of Chennai. The facility is located within Origins by Mahindra, an integrated industrial cluster, and was inaugurated virtually by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday.
The new plant has been set up inside the Mahindra Origins campus with a total investment of approximately Rs 2,100 crore. This marks Mitsubishi Electric’s second manufacturing facility in India in just 2 years, following the launch of its Factory Automation Systems plant in Pune in 2023.
According to the company, the Chennai facility is a key part of its long-term strategy to increase localisation, strengthen supply chain resilience, and support India’s shift towards advanced and sustainable manufacturing.
Spread across 210,000 sq m, the facility has an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioners and 6,50,000 compressor units. It is expected to create more than 2,100 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The company said the plant will also boost the regional supplier ecosystem by encouraging local sourcing of components, building technical capabilities among partners, and supporting skill development aligned with global manufacturing standards.
The facility will enable higher domestic production of room air conditioners and compressors, components that have traditionally depended on imports. By manufacturing these products locally, Mitsubishi Electric India aims to reduce import reliance, support a self-reliant HVAC manufacturing ecosystem, and contribute to the country’s wider manufacturing goals.
Speaking at the inauguration, Tamil Nadu Industries Secretary TRB Rajaa said the State leads the country with around 40,000 factories and is growing at 11.19%, making it the only State recording double-digit growth. He added that Tamil Nadu accounts for 31% of India’s electronics production and 41% of electronic exports.
“We want to get the supply chain to the State across manufacturing sectors to increase localisation and help foreign comapnies,” he said.
Atsushi Takase, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Electric India, said, “India is witnessing a rapid growth for energy-efficient and high-quality air-conditioning solutions. This facility will support this growing demand through local manufacturing, while enabling us to respond faster to customer needs, strengthen quality control, and ensure sustainable operations. It will position India as a core hub within Mitsubishi Electric’s global air conditioning business. Aligned with the progressive industrial vision of the Tamil Nadu government, this investment underscores our long-term commitment to India, Tamil Nadu, and the country’s manufacturing ambitions.”
