Mistral has launched its first open source speech generation and understanding AI model named Voxtral. Announced on Tuesday, Voxtral is designed to convert text into speech and also understand speech to generate responses naturally. The model is available in two sizes, with one offering 24 billion parameters and the other featuring 3 billion parameters.
The Paris-based AI company stated that Voxtral is free to download and is also being offered at a low cost through an application programming interface. Highlighting voice as “humanity’s first interface,” Mistral emphasized the need to make communication with AI more human and intuitive.
Mistral pointed out a gap in the current market. On one side are open source models that lack accuracy and deep understanding. On the other are expensive, closed models that are not easily accessible. Voxtral aims to solve this by delivering powerful speech and language capabilities in an open and accessible format.
There are three versions of Voxtral. Voxtral Small with 24 billion parameters is intended for large-scale applications. Voxtral Mini with 3 billion parameters is made for local and on-device use. Voxtral Mini Transcribe, also with 3 billion parameters, focuses on transcription tasks and is said to perform better than OpenAI Whisper.
The models come with a context window of 32,000 tokens, allowing up to 30 minutes of transcription or 40 minutes of voice interaction. Voxtral can also understand and summarize audio content and answer related questions.
The models support a wide range of languages including English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Hindi, German, Dutch, Italian, and others. Built on the Mistral Small 3.1 architecture, Voxtral also allows users to give commands by voice through function calling, without needing to type.
Mistral claims the Voxtral Small model outperforms GPT 4o mini Transcribe and Gemini 2.5 Flash, and provides better multilingual performance than ElevenLabs Scribe.
