Microsoft to introduce new AI agents with independent digital identities for enterprises

Microsoft is preparing to launch a new category of artificial intelligence (AI) agents designed for enterprise use, capable of functioning as independent users within organisations. The Redmond-based technology company has included the upcoming feature in its Microsoft 365 product roadmap, describing it as a major step towards creating general-purpose, embodied AI that can perform tasks autonomously. While the release is expected in November, the exact date for enterprise availability has not yet been confirmed.

Introducing general-purpose AI agents

According to Microsoft’s official Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the new product, titled Agentic Users, is currently in development and will be accessible through the M365 Agent Store and Teams once released.

Microsoft describes these agents as “a new class of AI that operates as independent users within the enterprise workforce.” Unlike traditional AI tools designed for specific functions, these agents will have the flexibility to perform a wide variety of tasks across different systems. Each Agentic User will have its own identity and direct access to organisational systems and applications, enabling them to function seamlessly across platforms.

What the new AI agents can do

Microsoft stated that these AI agents will be capable of attending meetings, editing documents, sending and receiving emails, chatting, and performing other tasks autonomously. They will also be able to collaborate with both human employees and other AI agents, adding a new dimension to workplace productivity and automation.

Rich Gibbons, a Microsoft licensing specialist, shared in a blog post that he reviewed documentation provided to Microsoft 365 administrators. The materials reportedly refer to the new product as A365 and note that administrators will assign the required licence during approval, with no additional licence needed. “So there will be at least one A365 licence, but the word ‘required’ suggests, to me at least, that we will see a range of A365 licences for different ‘roles’,” Gibbons explained.

Another administrator, João Ferreira, who also accessed the same documentation, revealed that these AI agents will have their own email addresses, Teams accounts, entries in enterprise directories, and designated positions within organisational charts.

With these capabilities, Microsoft’s upcoming Agentic Users could transform how enterprises integrate AI into daily operations, creating digital collaborators that can act, communicate, and execute tasks independently.
