Microsoft revamps HR structure to align with AI-first strategy and faster execution

In a significant organisational shift, Microsoft’s Chief People Officer Amy Coleman has announced a major restructuring of the company’s human resources division, signalling a move towards agility and speed as the company adapts to the AI era.

According to a news report, Coleman shared the changes in an internal memo, urging employees to embrace a new mindset. “We’re no longer being asked to scale for stability; we need to scale for adaptability and help set a new pace. I’m excited about this moment and what’s ahead. Let’s keep learning, let go of old assumptions, and make Microsoft a place where everyone can do their best work.”

The restructuring also includes leadership transitions. Lindsay-Rae McIntyre, Chief Diversity Officer, will exit on March 31 to take up a Chief People Officer role elsewhere. She will be succeeded by Leslie Lawson Sims, who will lead a newly formed People & Culture team focused on accelerating HR operations and shaping workplace culture.

Several senior leaders, including Kristen Roby Dimlow, Chuck Edward, and Dawn Klinghoffer, will retire at the end of the fiscal year after long tenures.

As part of the new HR structure, Microsoft has introduced key changes:

  • Engineering HR will be consolidated under Mel Simpson to better align with product priorities.
  • Employee Experience will expand under Nathalie D’Hers, with People Analytics integrated to enable faster insights.
  • Total Rewards will be led by Mike Cyran, with Fred Thiele and Mark Breer stepping into expanded roles to strengthen compensation and benefits.
  • A new Workforce Acceleration team will be led by Justin Thenutai, focusing on skilling, redeployment, and human-agent collaboration.

This overhaul follows Microsoft’s recent workforce actions, including the exit of 2000 low-performing employees last year and the introduction of a 3-day return-to-office policy.

The changes reflect a broader industry shift towards leaner structures, stronger performance management, and AI-driven transformation. Microsoft is repositioning its HR function to support an adaptive, high-speed work environment, moving away from stability towards continuous evolution.
