Microsoft is rolling out a new update to its Photos app on Windows 11 for all Insider channels, introducing an AI-driven auto-categorisation feature for Copilot Plus PCs. The update automatically sorts images into predefined categories, helping users manage large photo libraries more efficiently. The feature may expand to more users in the near future.
The auto-categorisation function uses AI to recognise visual content and group photos into folders such as screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes. Microsoft says the feature is language-agnostic, meaning it can detect document types in any language. The goal is to save time, reduce clutter, and make it easier for users to find images quickly.
Photos that match the AI model’s patterns are automatically placed into these categories. Users can browse the groups through the app’s left navigation panel or the Search bar, and they have the option to manually adjust a photo’s category if needed.
In addition, Microsoft has expanded Super Resolution to all Copilot Plus PCs powered by Snapdragon, AMD, and Intel processors. This feature enhances and enlarges low-resolution images using advanced AI technology. Users will be prompted to download a model package when using the tool. The update also includes other unspecified improvements and bug fixes.
The update is rolling out across all Windows Insider channels. Users can access the new features by updating the Photos app to version 2025.11090.25001.0 or higher through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft noted that the rollout may be gradual, and some features may not appear immediately for every Insider.
