Microsoft launches Copilot Checkout for in chat product search and purchases

Microsoft has introduced Copilot Checkout, a new artificial intelligence powered shopping feature that allows users to search for and buy products directly within the Copilot chat window. With this move, the company joins other major players such as OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity in the growing space of AI driven shopping tools. Although Microsoft entered this segment later than its rivals, it has already partnered with Shopify, PayPal, and Stripe to support the service. In November, the company had also added shopping features to Copilot on the Edge browser.

In a blog post, the technology firm announced that Copilot Checkout is now available in the United States through the chatbot’s website. A wider rollout across more regions and platforms is expected soon. Microsoft has also opened applications for merchants who want to join the platform through PayPal or Stripe. At present, users can browse and purchase products listed on Shopify.

Microsoft describes the new feature as a “conversation to conversion” tool. The company claims that “journeys that include Copilot led to 53 percent more purchases within 30 minutes of interaction compared to those without,” and that “when shopping intent is present, journeys with Copilot are 194 percent more likely to result in a purchase.”

The user experience is simple. Shoppers can type a request or ask for product suggestions on Copilot’s web version. Once recommendations appear, they can tap the buy option. A pop up window will then open for payment and order confirmation. After completing the purchase, users will receive order and delivery details along with a tracking link.

Microsoft stated that it will not handle transactions, customer data, or post purchase relationships. Instead, this information will be passed on to the merchant at the time of sale.
