Microsoft has taken a significant step in artificial intelligence by unveiling its first in-house models, MAI-1-preview and MAI-Voice-1. This marks a new direction for the company, which has so far relied heavily on OpenAI’s technology to power its products like Copilot.
The new models were introduced by Microsoft’s AI division, led by Mustafa Suleyman. MAI-1-preview is a text-based large language model designed to handle everyday queries with accuracy and helpfulness. Currently available for testing on LMArena, the model was trained on approximately 15,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs. Compared to other industry players such as xAI’s Grok, which used more than 100,000 GPUs, Microsoft’s approach demonstrates a more efficient use of resources. The model will soon be integrated into text-based use cases within Copilot.
On the other hand, MAI-Voice-1 is a speech generation system capable of producing 60-second-long audio clips in just one second using a single GPU. Described as a “highly expressive and natural speech generation model,” it is already being used in features like Copilot Daily and Podcasts. Microsoft plans to make it accessible to users through Copilot Labs, where it will support interactive storytelling experiences.
In an earlier statement, Mustafa Suleyman had shared that Microsoft’s in-house models will focus on delivering strong consumer experiences rather than enterprise use cases, aiming to create tools that are “extremely well optimized for our use case.”
While Microsoft has invested billions in OpenAI, recent reports suggest tensions between the two companies, with OpenAI executives earlier this year reportedly considering raising concerns over Microsoft’s competitive practices.
With MAI-1-preview and MAI-Voice-1, Microsoft is positioning itself to compete directly in the AI space, expanding its innovation beyond partnerships and building technologies that could shape the future of consumer AI.
