Microsoft Announces Shutdown of Lens Scanning App

Microsoft has announced that it will shut down its popular document scanning app, Microsoft Lens, by the end of 2025. Available for both iOS and Android, the app will be phased out in stages starting in September.

The retirement process will begin on 15 September 2025. By mid October, new downloads of the app will be disabled on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. In mid November, Microsoft Lens will be removed entirely from both platforms. On 15 December 2025, the ability to create new scans will be disabled, although existing files will remain available in the MyScans folder.

After the shutdown, users will still be able to access their saved scans but the app will no longer receive updates or customer support.

Microsoft Lens was first launched in March 2014 as Office Lens for Windows Phone. It is a year older than Windows 10 and has remained one of the highest rated free apps on both major app stores. The decision to retire the app comes just weeks before Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 in October 2025.

For future document scanning needs, Microsoft is directing users to the Scan feature in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. “We will continue to invest in new features and improvements there,” the company stated. The Copilot app now allows users to scan text directly into Word, scan tables into Excel and more. Files saved to OneDrive through this feature will be stored in the MyCreations section of the Copilot app.

Additional details for administrators can be found in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under message ID MC1131064.
