Microsoft Research and Ninja Theory have unveiled an AI model called Muse

Microsoft Research and Xbox game studio Ninja Theory have developed a new artificial intelligence model called Muse that can generate gameplay visuals and predict controller inputs, marking what the company calls a breakthrough in AI for gaming.

The model, trained on over one billion images and controller actions from the 2020 game Bleeding Edge, demonstrates an understanding of 3D game worlds and physics while responding to player interactions. Microsoft describes Muse as the first of a new category called World and Human Action Models (WHAM).

However, the current prototype has significant limitations, only capable of generating low-resolution gameplay at 300×180 pixels. A real-time demonstration ran at just 10 frames per second, according to Microsoft researchers.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer suggested the technology could aid in game preservation, potentially allowing classic games to run on modern hardware without requiring the original engine. The company also sees applications in game prototyping and development workflows.

Dom Matthews, the CEO of the Ninja Theory studio, stressed that Muse isn’t meant for content production in the face of industry worries about AI replacing human workers, especially in light of the massive layoffs in the gaming business in 2024.

“The interesting aspect for us is how we can use technology like this to make the process of making games quicker and easier for our talented team,” Matthews stated.

Although no timeframe was specified, Microsoft intends to use Copilot Labs to offer some interactive AI gaming experiences. Individual Xbox studios will have the freedom to choose how to incorporate generative AI technology into their games, according to the firm.
