Microsoft Adds 1Password Passkey Support to Windows 11 Preview

Microsoft has added support for 1Password passkeys in the latest Windows 11 25H2 preview builds, available in both the Dev and Beta channels. This update allows users to access and manage passkeys stored in 1Password directly through Windows Security, and also create new passkeys from the app. The feature is designed to help users switch from regular passwords to a more secure method.

To enable this feature, users need to download the 1Password Beta app on Windows 11. This move is part of Microsoft’s larger goal of removing password-based login methods by 2025. The company also plans to remove traditional password features from its Authenticator app soon.

The new integration supports FIDO Alliance security standards and enhances the Windows Hello login experience. It allows users to sign in using face recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN. Passkeys can be synced across devices using either a Microsoft account or services like 1Password and Bitwarden. These passkeys are protected using end-to-end encryption and the device’s Trusted Platform Module, known as TPM.

This preview build also confirms the first official appearance of Windows 11 version 25H2, now visible in the system’s About section and winver dialog. Along with new features, the update also fixes several issues related to File Explorer, Start menu animations, system input, and memory usage.

Currently, the update is being tested by Windows Insiders and will be available to all users later this year.

Microsoft’s goal is to make sign-ins faster and safer by using passkeys and biometrics instead of passwords. This feature helps reduce the risk of phishing and improves login convenience across Windows 11 devices.
