Meta’s new AI Team delivered first key models internally this month

As the AI race sharpens at Davos, Meta has said its new research team has already delivered its first major AI models for internal use this month. The update came from Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth during a press briefing on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting.

Bosworth said the models were built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, a team formed last year. He said the work is still early, but the results look strong. “They’re basically 6 months into the work, not quite even,” Bosworth said, adding that the team’s AI models were “very good” and showed a lot of promise.

In December, reports said Meta was working on a text AI model codenamed Avocado, expected for a first quarter launch, along with an image and video focused model codenamed Mango. Bosworth did not confirm which models were delivered internally.

Meta’s AI push is being watched closely after CEO Mark Zuckerberg reshaped the company’s AI leadership, set up a new lab, and recruited talent with very large offers. The changes come after Meta faced criticism over the performance of its Llama 4 model, while rivals such as Alphabet’s Google and others gained momentum.

Bosworth said the technology is not finished yet. Speaking about the development cycle, he said: “There’s a tremendous amount of work to do post-training” for AI, “to actually deliver the model in a way that’s usable internally and by consumers.”

He also said Meta is starting to see positive returns from its big moves in 2025, which he described as a “tremendously chaotic year” as the company built its lab, expanded infrastructure, and secured power.

Looking ahead, Bosworth said 2026 and 2027 should bring clearer consumer AI trends, as newer models already handle “the kinds of things that you ask every day with your family, your kids,” while continuing to improve on harder queries. He said the next 2 years will be important for bringing consumer products to market.

Meta is also promoting AI enabled Ray Ban Display glasses. The company paused international expansion of the glasses earlier this month to focus on meeting US demand.
