Meta is preparing to unveil a new line of smart wearables at its annual Connect conference, including its first smart glasses with a built-in display and a wristband that allows users to control the device using hand movements.
The smart glasses, codenamed Hypernova, will feature a small digital display integrated into the right lens. Priced at around 800 dollars, the glasses will be available in collaboration with eyewear company EssilorLuxottica. This launch comes after last year’s demonstration of Mark Zuckerberg’s experimental Orion AR glasses.
While Hypernova will have a colour display, its functions will be limited. With a viewing area of nearly 20 degrees, the display will appear as a small fixed window mainly showing notifications and short text updates.
The wristband that accompanies the glasses is powered by sEMG sensor technology. This technology reads electrical signals from hand movements to control the glasses, similar to the approach used in Apple’s Vision Pro. Meta considers the wristband an important step towards developing fully functional AR glasses in the future.
However, testing has revealed some challenges. These include accuracy issues when the wristband is worn loosely, different performance levels between men and women, and difficulties when used with long sleeves. Recently, developers have been invited to test both Hypernova and the wristband.
Meta is also encouraging third party developers, especially those working with generative AI, to build applications for its wearable ecosystem.
Along with Hypernova and the wristband, Meta is expected to introduce the third generation of its voice only smart glasses at Connect. These glasses are being developed with Luxottica and are described in a recent filing as “The Next Generation Smart Glasses.” They will include capacitive touch technology for gesture based controls.
