Building on early user traction, Meta has confirmed that it is testing a standalone app for its AI-powered video feature, Vibes. The move signals the company’s intent to expand the reach of the feature beyond the Meta AI app and offer users a more focused creative space.
Vibes was launched in September last year as part of the Meta AI app. The feature allows users to create and share short-form videos that are entirely AI-generated. Unlike platforms such as TikTok or Instagram Reels, every video on Vibes is created using artificial intelligence and appears in a dedicated feed.
Meta said the decision to test a standalone app follows the initial success of Vibes within Meta AI. In an email to a publication, the company stated, “Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum.” It added that more users are using the format to create and share AI-generated videos with friends, and a separate app would offer a more immersive experience.
The shift also places Meta in direct competition with Sora, OpenAI’s AI-generated video and social app that launched shortly after Vibes. While Meta has not shared specific usage figures, it said engagement with Meta AI has been steadily rising since launch, suggesting growing interest in AI-driven content creation.
According to the company, users currently consume and create content within Meta AI, but a dedicated app would allow for deeper engagement and a clearer focus on creativity. The standalone format is expected to support both content creation and discovery more effectively.
The Vibes app allows users to create videos from scratch or remix existing videos from their feed. Before posting, users can add visuals, music, and styles. Finished videos can be shared on the Vibes feed, sent through direct messages, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Meta also said it plans to test subscription models for AI features such as Vibes in the coming months.
