Development timelines in the artificial intelligence sector continue to shift as companies refine their next-generation models. Meta Platforms has reportedly delayed the release of its AI model code-named “Avocado,” pushing the expected launch to at least May instead of the earlier timeline planned for this month.
The delay comes as Meta continues to invest heavily in expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities. The company is pursuing a broader strategy that includes developing its own AI chips and advancing research toward what it describes as “superintelligence,” a stage where AI systems could surpass human intelligence.
Earlier in Jan, Meta outlined capital expenditure plans ranging between $115 billion and $135 billion for the year to support its AI ambitions and infrastructure expansion.
According to reports citing people familiar with the matter, the Avocado model has not yet achieved the level of performance needed to compete with the latest AI models introduced by rival companies. This has contributed to the decision to postpone the launch.
Responding to the development, a Meta spokesperson said, “Our next model will be good, but more importantly, show the rapid trajectory we’re on, and then we’ll steadily push the frontier over the course of the year as we continue to release new models.”
The spokesperson added, “We’re excited for people to see what we’ve been cooking very soon.”
Reports also suggest that leaders within Meta’s AI division have discussed the possibility of temporarily licensing the Google Gemini model developed by Google to support some of the company’s AI products. However, no final decision has been made regarding this option.
Earlier reports in Dec indicated that Meta had been developing the Avocado text-based AI model for several months and had originally planned to introduce it during the first quarter of the year.
The revised timeline highlights the intense competition in the AI sector, where companies are racing to build more powerful models while ensuring they meet performance expectations before public release.
