Meta has announced plans to acquire Chinese artificial intelligence startup Manus as it steps up efforts to embed advanced AI features across its platforms.
The move reflects growing competition among global technology companies to secure cutting edge AI tools through acquisitions and talent expansion. Earlier in 2025, Meta invested in Scale AI in a deal that valued the data labeling company at $29 billion and brought its 28 year old chief executive Alexandr Wang into the company.
Financial details of the Manus acquisition have not been disclosed.
Manus is based in Singapore and develops a general purpose AI agent designed to work like a digital employee. The system can independently handle tasks such as research and automation with minimal prompts from users. Meta said it plans to operate and sell the Manus service and also integrate it into its consumer and business offerings, including Meta AI.
The startup launched its AI agent earlier this year and claimed that its performance exceeds that of OpenAI’s DeepResearch tool. To promote its capabilities, Manus completed dozens of tasks for users on X at no cost.
Manus operates under Beijing Butterfly Effect Technology Ltd Co and is part of a growing group of Chinese firms that have shifted their base to Singapore in recent years. These companies are increasingly choosing the trade focused city state to reduce the risk of business disruption linked to ongoing Sino US geopolitical tensions.
With this acquisition, Meta aims to accelerate the deployment of AI agents that can perform complex tasks across its platforms, strengthening its position in the fast evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
